Google: Following a Trend or Blazing a Trail?

If you do anything online you probably noticed Google’s new logo was revealed last week. There’s been quite a bit of chatter about it in the design world, with everybody having their own opinion.

There has been a slow, almost casual, shift in logo design over the past couple of years. Designers have been eschewing the classic serif fonts in favor of slab-serif or sans-serif fonts. Here are some more logos—both national and local—that have made the shift to flatter designs in recent years.

Do you think Google’s change was necessary? Or have they merely caught themselves up in trend?
